Something else it has in droves is fascinating female characters that’ll make your heart skip a beat. Hideo Kojima knows how to balance depth and experimentation with giving gamers what they want, so he serves you a meaty game that’ll blow your mind and change your outlook on life with a side of waifus. Today, we’ll look back at this iconic series to find the best waifus across all Metal Gear games.
10. Venus
I’m a big fan of the Metal Gear Acid duology on the PSP. Besides being on the best portable console ever made, I like Acid because of its unique gameplay, bizarre storyline, and interesting characters. One of the most attention-grabbing is MGA2’s Venus, easily one of the hottest women in Metal Gear history. This red battlesuit-clad vixen is a bio-engineered super-soldier working as an assassin for the FBI. At first, she’s ruthless and cold, but she reveals more of her humanity as the game progresses. Overall, she’s an intriguing character with hidden depths that anyone would want to declare “mai waifu.”
9. Naomi Hunter
Back in the day, a pretty face and a charming accent would have been enough to make someone a popular waifu. Nowadays people are a little bit more discerning. Dr. Naomi Hunter has both a beautiful face and a succulent accent, but she’s also a genius geneticist and nanomachine expert. She could probably extend your life, cure your diseases, and develop a better Covid-19 vaccine with the help of nanotechnology. Regrettably, she’s used her knowledge for evil more often than not due to her deep resentment toward armed conflict.
8. Michiko Takiyama
Another big-brain scientist with ties to the bad guys is Michiko Takiyama from Metal Gear Acid 2. Dr. Takiyama has always been a bit of a coward, but her high IQ and expertise in Psychological Engineering made her an invaluable asset to one of the main villains of MGA2. During the events of the game, Takiyama grows to trust Snake and shows a caring, sensible side that reveals her true nature as a fundamentally good human being. Fans have compared Michiko to Otacon since she first burst into the scene, and it’s easy to see why. Still, if Otacon had the same sex appeal as Michiko, he’d be Ricardo Milos in a lab coat.
7. Meryl
Have you ever wondered who Solid Snake would call his “waifu”? Based on the games, it would have to be Meryl. This spunky redhead was the only character in the entire series to elicit real feelings in the soldier’s heart. Those feelings were requited at the Shadow Moses incident, though nothing serious ever happened between them. In MGS4: Guns of the Patriots, Meryl makes a glorious return as the leader of the Rat Patrol, providing Old Snake some support in the Middle East. It’s a bittersweet moment, as Snake’s accelerated aging has driven them further apart – never to be reunited in love.
6. Mei Ling
Another young lady with a thing for Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid was Mei Ling, the Chinese-American data analyst who’d always be there for you when you needed to save. Can’t ask for better psychological support than a cute girl on the other side of the CODEC line! She’s well-versed in English and Chinese literature and would always share a quote or a proverb with Snake on their CODEC calls. After Shadow Moses, her fierce and righteous heart led her to keep collaborating with Philanthropy from inside the military by providing stolen equipment and classified intel. Witty, tender, and able to keep a good mood in the most trying times, Mei Ling is a breath of fresh air in the darkness of Shadow Moses.
5. Cécile Cosima Caminades
Another bright lady with an uncanny ability to brighten up any situation is Cécile Cosima Caminades, a French ornithologist (bird scholar) turned scout for the Militaires Sans Frontières. Cécile is an adventurous woman who found herself involved in the battle between Big Boss and the Peace Sentinels after accidentally recording the Boss AI during a bird-watching expedition. Ever the thrill-seeker, she decided to stay with Big Boss at Mother Base, doing reconnaissance missions and making life at the oil rig a bit more lively. With a sexy french accent, an uninhibited personality, and top-notch cooking skills, Cécile is the gentleman’s pick for a Metal Gear waifu.
4. Sniper Wolf
Few characters have gone from hated villain to beloved character as fast as Sniper Wolf in the original MGS. After spending the whole game evading this expert sniper and harboring a growing hatred, we all expected the moment we finally beat her to be glorious. At that moment, the game punches us in the gut by revealing her tragic backstory. Sniper Wolf was a Kurd war child who lost everyone close to her in the Kurdish-Turkish conflict. She’s another victim of a war without end, watching through the sniper scope for a chance to take revenge. It’s hard not to develop a soft spot for this untamed Wolf after that.
3. Para-Medic
If Hideo Kojima had to pick his own MGS waifu, he’d probably choose Para-Medic from MGS3. Like Kojima, Dr. Clark is a huge cinema buff with a taste for the classics and massive respect for the craft. In MGS3, she’d take any opportunity to discuss her favorite films with Snake, including Dracula, Dr. Strangelove, A Fistful of Dollars, and Godzilla. If you’re looking for a lifelong partner, being able to carry a conversation is paramount. Para-Medic had a seemingly endless catalog of movie topics to discuss. Dr. Clark was also highly-intelligent and ambitious, becoming a founder member of the Patriots and a key figure in the Les Enfants Terribles project.
2. EVA
EVA is the perfect Femme Fatale for a soldier who lives and breathes war like Big Boss. Introduced in MGS3, EVA was a triple agent advancing the interests of the Chinese government by helping Snake achieve his goal while undercover as a member of Volgin’s inner circle. Her skill at manipulating men allowed her to infiltrate the highest echelons of power wherever she went, and she used this power to support Big Boss through thick and thin. She even gave birth to Big Boss’ clones – Liquid and Solid – as part of the Les Enfants Terribles project. As seen in MGS4, Big Mama remains a highly-competent agent even in her late 70s, and her love for Big Boss is unwavering.
1. Quiet
At first glance, Quiet is the epitome of fanservice. A mute character who wears a bikini in the middle of a warzone? Come on! And yet, Kojima made Quiet one of the series’ most endearing and lovable characters through a string of heartfelt interactions like playing in the rain or taking a shower together. Like a cat with its human companion, Quiet tells you everything you need to know with how she looks at you and by allowing herself to be vulnerable around you. She’s one of the few characters on the list willing to hit the ground and infiltrate enemy territory with you, and you know you can trust her with your life. Killer looks and literal superpowers are great – but what makes me call Quiet “mai waifu” are her heartfelt feelings and commitment to protecting the one she loves.
